Midtown Comics Times Square: stories beyond the screen

A character you know from a film can lead you to a collected story at Midtown Comics Times Square, without requiring a command of decades of comic-book continuity. The West 40th Street shop carries new comics, graphic novels and manga, with weekly releases arriving on Wednesdays. Compare the artwork across individual issues and collected volumes; the latter let you follow a longer story in one book.

Broadway Dance Center: learn the choreography

Working industry teachers lead classes at Broadway Dance Center, where you can practice theater dance rather than leave all the movement to the cast. The West 45th Street studio’s Broadway Choreography Series teaches original choreography from stage shows. Its wider class program includes ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical and contemporary dance, as well as street jazz, floor flow and vogue.

Broadway Theatre: Gatsby on a large stage

The Great Gatsby brings ensemble choreography and a jazz- and pop-influenced score to Broadway Theatre. You can see Marc Bruni’s direction and Dominique Kelley’s choreography unfold in a 1,765-seat house built for entertainment on a large scale.

SPYSCAPE & SPYGAMES: codes, clues and deception

Code-cracking and tests of observation put you to work at SPYSCAPE & SPYGAMES, near the northern end of this group of stops. The museum explores deception, hacking, surveillance, intelligence, encryption and special operations through real stories, artifacts and equipment. Lie-detection equipment supplies a physical counterpart to the deception challenge, while a briefing tests what you noticed and remembered.

Carnegie Hall: three rooms for live music

Soloists and full ensembles share Carnegie Hall’s calendar, which reaches across classical music and other musical traditions. You can make a recital the focus of your evening or hear a larger ensemble in Stern Auditorium, the main room known for its acoustics. Five curved seating levels surround its stage, placing the scale of the hall around the performers.

Birdland Jazz Club: dinner with the band

Big bands, guitarists and vocalists give you different ways to spend an evening at Birdland Jazz Club, back in the western theater cluster on West 44th Street. Its programming includes the Birdland Latin Jazz Orchestra, Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, David Ostwald’s Louis Armstrong Eternity Band and John Pizzarelli Swing 7. The calendar ranges across standards, New Orleans jazz traditions and visiting artists.
