The National Lighthouse Museum occupies a 1912 foundry, so the building itself belongs to the story on display. It is one of six surviving structures from a depot that once had eighteen, supplying the people who kept America’s lighthouses working.
Before a show, look above the St. George Theatre’s grand lobby for paintings of a bullfight and a Spanish village. The winding stairs and stained-glass chandeliers continue that theatrical setting, designed by interior specialist Nestor Castro for the 1929 movie palace.
As you walk among Snug Harbor’s grand buildings, remember that its retired sailors were each addressed as Captain. The community eventually supported its own dairy, bakery and power plant, making these grounds a working home as well as an architectural showpiece.
The Staten Island Ferry comes first. It's fare-free and takes about 25 minutes each way between St. George Ferry Terminal and Lower Manhattan. After that it's Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, an 83-acre campus that was once a retirement home for sailors.
I'd start at Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden (4.5★ from 4421 reviews) for the New York Chinese Scholar's Garden and more than two dozen Greek Revival, Beaux Arts, Italianate and Victorian buildings. St. George Theatre is in the same neighborhood, so you can pair the two.
Staten Island Zoo is where I'd start with kids. If yours would rather solve a puzzle than look at animals, Unreal Escapes is a live escape room and virtual reality arcade holding 5★ from 1634 reviews.
Parks and nature preserves are the most common kinds of place in the borough. Clove Lakes Park (4.7★ from 3507 reviews) and Willowbrook Park, which has a hiking trail, are the two to know, and Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk and Beach is the one for the shore. For a longer walk, the Staten Island Greenbelt is a 2,800-acre system of connected parkland and trails in the central hills.
The Staten Island Ferry is fare-free, which makes the ride to St. George Ferry Terminal the easiest free outing in the borough. Beyond that, 6 of the 24 events dated for the coming week are free.
Go to St. George if you want museums, botanical gardens and farmers' markets, with St. George Ferry Terminal as your way in. Stapleton is mostly performing arts theaters, and it's where you'll find Rab's Country Lanes, an arcade bar. Great Kills is more about standing places like massage spas, churches, nature preserves and Atrium Stadium Cinemas than dated events.
Yes. Historic Richmond Town is a museum complex of historic buildings near the geographical center of the island, and Alice Austen House is the home of photographer Alice Austen and a National Historic Landmark. The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art is built to resemble a Himalayan monastery and holds one of the most extensive collections of Himalayan artifacts in the United States.
