Arrive across the harbor

The orange Staten Island Ferry brings you from Lower Manhattan across the harbor to St. George Ferry Terminal. Looking back toward Manhattan is part of this arrival, with the water separating the skyline from the neighborhood you’re coming to explore.

Meet the people behind the harbor lights

Keepers Kate Walker and Charles Vanderhoop Sr. are among the people you meet through the permanent displays at the National Lighthouse Museum. Their individual stories appear in Life at the Light, which explores the lives of lighthouse keepers. The museum occupies the former US Lighthouse Service depot site, connecting those accounts to a place where lighthouse equipment was made or inspected.

Browse the Saturday market

Regional farmers and food producers gather at Saint George Greenmarket on Saturdays year-round, with the harbor and Lower Manhattan skyline as their backdrop. You can browse for bread, cheese and something sweet in the theatre parking lot at Saint Marks Place and Hyatt Street. This is a producer-only market, where the sellers grow the produce or make the food they bring.

Continue into Tompkinsville for books and tea

Local authors and books about Staten Island share the shelves with vintage and collectible volumes at Every Thing Goes Book Cafe and Neighborhood Stage. A short continuation into adjoining Tompkinsville brings you to this used-book shop. Its collection fills three rooms, including a children’s corner and a third room devoted in part to cookbooks, art, photography and theatre books. That room also holds records and a listening station.

See a show in a rescued movie palace

Dance educator Rosemary Cappozalo and her daughters helped save St. George Theatre from demolition in 2004. Back in St. George, you can attend concerts, comedy, films and family entertainment in the restored 1929 movie and vaudeville palace. The building’s original role explains the theatrical scale of the interior, where Spanish, Renaissance and Moorish Revival details surround the performance.
