Explore the working lives behind Pier 16’s ships

The sailors aboard Wavertree slept in forecastle bunks, ate from a shipboard galley and worked above a vast cargo hold. You can explore those spaces through the South Street Seaport Museum, moving from the main deck to the captain’s saloon and quarterdeck, turning the ship’s wheel and looking down into the hold. The nineteenth-century cargo ship gives you a concrete sense of how much space went to freight and how its crew lived around it.

Browse two floors of books on Fulton Street

McNally Jackson Books Seaport gives you new fiction, international literature and illustrated books to explore inside Schermerhorn Row, the 1811 building on Fulton Street. Staff recommendations offer specific titles to investigate when you arrive without one in mind. The shop spreads across two floors, with reading corners and windows overlooking the cobblestones outside.

Take a picnic out over the river at Pier 15

You can sit beside the East River or bring a picnic to Pier 15 East River Esplanade, south of the museum’s ships. The public pier has two levels: an elevated park with lawn areas above a lower waterfront walkway. From the upper level, the outlook takes in the river and harbor.

Catch a new release or a returning classic

The Cinemas NYC pairs new releases with Encore Cinema, its repertory program bringing older movies back to the big screen. You can make a film the indoor end to a waterfront outing, or pair it with the bookstore nearby on Fulton Street when rain makes the river less inviting. The independent cinema’s selection spans genres, including classic horror in its October programming.

Hear live music above the East River

Bands and DJs perform above the water at The Rooftop at Pier 17, with the skyline behind the outdoor concert setting. You can hear rock, indie and electronic acts here, with the 2026 concert calendar extending through October. For an evening centered on music, the particular artist is the place to start; the river becomes part of the setting once the performance begins.
