Record Shop: records and adventurous music

Musicians have paired tabla, accordion and bass at Record Shop, where you can browse records as well as come for a performance. The music program leans into jazz, improvisation and experimental ensembles, with room for solo players too. Past bills have included Cleek Schrey on solo fiddle and a collaboration between flute and tap dance. Those combinations make this a particularly appealing stop if you're interested in hearing musicians work outside familiar band arrangements.

Red Hook Pinball Museum: put the old games to work

You can play a half inning of baseball on a machine from 1934 at Red Hook Pinball Museum. World's Series uses mechanical engineering to turn baseball into a tabletop game, one example from a playable collection spanning the 1870s through the 1970s. For a different challenge, Diamond Lill from 1954 has reversed flippers and a horseshoe shot. Even if you know modern pinball, those controls give you something unfamiliar to try.

Waterfront Museum: aboard a rescued cargo barge

David Sharps found Lehigh Valley Barge No. 79 in the New Jersey tideflats and began restoring it in 1985. You can step aboard that vessel at the Waterfront Museum, southwest of the Van Brunt Street pair. Built in 1914, the wooden barge once carried freight between New Jersey railroad facilities and ships around the harbor. Inside, the captain's original living quarters sit alongside tools used by longshoremen and other waterfront workers, plus gongs and bells from the port's maritime network.

Valentino Pier: harbor views and key lime pie

If you're coming for the harbor, Louis Valentino, Jr. Park and Pier puts the Statue of Liberty, Governors Island and Manhattan in view. North of the museum, the pier extends out from a former shipping area. Walk onto it for the water-facing panorama, then look back toward Red Hook, where industrial, historic and residential buildings share the shoreline. The view back gives the neighborhood itself as much attention as the landmarks across the water.
