MoMA PS1: art worked into the building
Curator Alanna Heiss founded MoMA PS1 in a former public school, inviting artists to transform its rooms for the opening exhibition in 1976. You can still encounter that approach throughout the building: alongside gallery exhibitions, 15 artist interventions occupy the old school's spaces, with works embedded in walls, ceilings and floors. PS1's contemporary art program also encompasses performances and residencies, continuing its connection with artists who use the museum as a place to work.

Movement LIC: ropes, boulders and a climbing cave
Climbers at Movement LIC tackle rope routes reaching 45 feet high and bouldering problems spread across two floors. You can start with introductory rope-climbing or bouldering classes, while the routes themselves range from beginner to advanced. Routes are reset weekly, changing the sequences of holds you work through. Climbing here calls on balance and strength as well as the puzzle of figuring out your next move.

BrickHouse: shape clay by hand or on the wheel
You can work clay with your hands or learn to shape it on a spinning wheel at BrickHouse Ceramic Art Center, farther west on the same stretch of 44th Drive as Movement. Its classes cover wheel throwing, handbuilding and sculpture. Handbuilding means forming the clay directly, while wheel throwing uses the wheel's rotation to develop the form.

Gantry Plaza: four piers and the old freight waterfront
From Gantry Plaza State Park, you can pick out the Empire State Building and the United Nations across the East River. Four piers extend the walk over the water, with landscaped gardens and a waterfront promenade connecting the park's open spaces. The restored gantries give this stretch its unmistakable profile. They once helped load and unload railcar floats and barges, and remain substantial pieces of the working waterfront against the Midtown skyline.

Hunter's Point South: wetlands, an overlook and outdoor art
You can follow the water directly from Gantry into Hunter's Point South Park, where paths curve around newly created wetlands and areas of wild planting. A cantilevered overlook projects outward above the landscape. From there, the skyline takes on a different perspective from the one you get along the paths at the water's edge.
