The people behind the puppets
The Manteo family built and painted the figures and backdrops for a marionette theater that staged nightly battles on Mulberry Street in the early 1900s. You can explore that tradition through 32 life-sized puppets donated by the family to the Italian American Museum. Agrippino Manteo’s productions drew on Orlando Furioso, the Italian epic of knights and adventures. The puppets preserve both the characters from those stories and the family’s work making a theater by hand.

Cook a complete meal at Miette
Classically trained chefs teach home cooks at Miette Culinary Studio, with hands-on menus that take you through an appetizer, a main course and dessert. You work on a complete meal, so the appeal is learning dishes you can put together again at home. For someone who wants to spend their Little Italy outing cooking, this is an alternative to the restaurant meal below. Let the class you select anchor the outing.

Littlenecks and linguine at Umberto’s
The family behind Umberto’s Clam House has served Italian seafood since the early 1970s. If you’re coming for clams, there are two appealing ways to build a meal: stuffed, baked littlenecks to share as an appetizer, or linguine with littlenecks, garlic and extra-virgin olive oil. I’d start with that distinction when reading the menu. The baked clams give you a separate first course; the linguine puts the shellfish at the center of your main dish.
195 Grand Street, New York, NY 10013
A crisp shell and a coffee at Ferrara
Five generations of family operation connect Ferrara Bakery to its beginnings in 1892. You can make this Grand Street stop a pastry-and-coffee finish after Mulberry Street, with table service if you want to sit down. The cannolo Siciliano pairs a crisp shell with sweet ricotta cream and chocolate chips. It’s the choice I’d point you toward for that particular combination of crunch, ricotta and chocolate.
