Things to do in Greenpoint

Greenpoint’s booksellers, record selectors and film programmers give you plenty to follow your curiosity toward. I like the choices here: coffee alongside vinyl, a first lesson in stitching, a movie whose title stays secret until the screening. Start with browsing in the neighborhood’s north, or build an outing around a film or a concert farther south.

A walk through Greenpoint

Coffee and record discoveries at For The Record

The staff picks at For The Record range across shoegaze, indie, electronic music, jazz, hip-hop, funk and country. You can browse with a coffee, moving between new releases and classic albums, with recommendations to help narrow the search. Looking through the covers is part of the pleasure here, even before you settle on a record.

The independent shop serves its own locally roasted specialty coffee, with breakfast and lunch supplied by local partners. That makes it a place to eat and browse together, with the records still central to the visit. It’s the northernmost stop in this guide, on Manhattan Avenue, so consider it a northern extension if your other plans center on Greenpoint Avenue.

Follow a bookseller’s recommendation at WORD

WORD’s booksellers organize recommendations around interests as particular as detective stories, history, queer reading and music. You can follow those reading lists or browse the covers and ask for a staff recommendation. For anyone coming south from the record shop, the music selections offer a natural connection between the two stops.

An independent bookseller since 2007, WORD also carries gifts and stationery, so your browsing can extend beyond the next book. Book clubs and events are part of its programming, too. The Greenpoint branch is on Franklin Street, west of the craft shop that follows in this guide. Nearby Transmitter Park offers an outdoor continuation if you’d prefer to follow the bookstore visit with a walk.

Learn a stitch at Brooklyn Craft Company

Brooklyn Craft Company teaches the skills behind the materials it sells, from sewing and embroidery to knitting, crochet, weaving and dyeing. You can begin with a workshop focused on your first stitches, or take a project-specific class that unfolds across several weeks.

East of WORD, the Greenpoint Avenue shop also rewards a visit when you already have work in progress. Browse DMC embroidery floss, hoops, yarn, fabric and patterns, along with supplies for mending and darning.

Let someone else choose the film

Film Noir Cinema gives its programmers, and sometimes a member of its film club, the pleasure of keeping the title to themselves. You can go into a screening knowing the film, or choose a program built around a surprise. Film Noir Monday concentrates on lesser-known noir, including international films, without announcing the title beforehand. The mystery is in the selection as well as whatever unfolds on screen.

Film Club uses a different arrangement: a different member chooses each film, keeping the title from the others. Cult Cinema turns toward obscure movies, while the broader program includes international repertory screenings and filmmaker events. Those formats give you a concrete choice between following a named film and trusting another person’s selection.

Live music and pierogi at Warsaw

Emerging and established musicians play Warsaw Concerts inside the historic Polish National Home, with the bistro’s signature pierogi adding a distinctly local element to your music night. You can pair a show with the Polish dumplings and a beer or cocktail from the bar. The programming now crosses genres; punk and indie concerts have been part of the building’s life since 2001, helping fund community programs.

The Polish National Home dates to 1914, and that history is visible around the performance: the ballroom stage has a gold frame, with paintings contributing to the setting. Farther south and east on Driggs Avenue, Warsaw is a destination to build around a concert, with its bistro folded into the experience.
