2640 Grand Concourse
Poe’s home, with room for new voices
Edgar Allan Poe lived here with his wife, Virginia, and mother-in-law, Maria Clemm, beginning in 1846. You can visit their small early-19th-century home at Edgar Allan Poe Cottage, where the domestic scale sits in striking contrast to modern Fordham around it. This was Poe’s final home and the place where he wrote Eureka: A Prose Poem, a work that now informs the cottage’s next chapter.

Read the Bronx through its own collections
The people who have made the Bronx home appear through photographs, manuscripts and firsthand accounts at Bronx Library Center. You can explore Latino life and migration through El Cuartito, its Latino and Puerto Rican Cultural Center, which also holds books and artwork. The fourth-floor reference room adds collections devoted to Bronx history and Edgar Allan Poe, extending a cottage visit into reading about the writer and the borough.

Work on your salsa at Yamulee
Osmar Perrones directs Yamulee Dance School on the Grand Concourse, southwest of the library, with an emphasis on fundamentals before advancing. If you’re beginning salsa, the work starts with the basics; more advanced sessions combine partnerwork with shines, the individual footwork dancers perform on their own. Spinning technique gets particular attention, breaking turns down into pivot mechanics and the balance needed to stay controlled while moving.

Continue east for palms or woodland paths
For plant lovers, the New York Botanical Garden offers a substantial separate continuation east of Fordham in neighboring Bronx Park. You can make the glass conservatory the focus, moving between tropical rainforest planting, vines and aquatic plants, and desert galleries filled with cacti. The palm dome adds another distinct environment to explore.
