Bowling Green: the bull and the surviving fence
Arturo Di Modica’s bronze Charging Bull draws attention beside Bowling Green, but you can also see a much older piece of downtown history around the park itself. The surviving colonial iron fence has lost its decorative tops. Those ornaments were removed during the Revolution in 1776, when the statue of George III that stood here was pulled down. The missing pieces are still visible in the ironwork.

Trinity Church and Hamilton’s grave
Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Hamilton are both buried in Trinity’s downtown churchyard. If you know their story through the musical, Hamilton’s grave gives you a specific memorial to visit and read, with Eliza’s burial here part of the same visit. His work as the first Treasury secretary and a founder of the Bank of New York also connects this small churchyard directly to the surrounding financial neighborhood.

The 9/11 Memorial and the stories below ground
The names of people killed in the September 11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing are inscribed on bronze parapets at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. You can walk beside the two reflecting pools, which occupy the former Twin Tower sites, and read those names. The outdoor memorial and the museum below ground are distinct visits; I’d give the museum its own place in the day rather than squeeze it between other stops.
117 West St
One World Observatory: downtown in the wider city
You can trace the relationship between downtown, the harbor and the surrounding boroughs from One World Observatory’s indoor, 360-degree viewing area. Midtown, Brooklyn and New Jersey come into the same panorama, with the neighborhood below taking on the scale of a map.
Performing Arts Center, 251 Fulton St
PAC NYC: a performance and a meal
Performers at Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC) work across plays, musicals, opera, dance and music, so you can build an outing around the form you most want to see. Alongside its ticketed mainstage productions, the center presents free performances on the Lobby Stage. Those are separate strands of the program, with the lobby offering another setting for hearing live music when a performance is scheduled.
28 Liberty St Ste SC301
Alamo Drafthouse: dinner during the film
Servers bring dinner and cocktails to your seat at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Lower Manhattan, so the meal happens during the film. You can see current releases or older titles here, making the cinema an option for both a new movie and a return to something from the repertory calendar.

Neighborhood FAQs
Which Financial District museums can I visit for free?
You can explore early federal history indoors at Federal Hall or visit the open-air fort and exhibits at Castle Clinton without paying admission.
Federal Hall National Memorial is free to enter Monday through Friday, with galleries covering George Washington, the Constitution and the federal government. Guided and self-guided tours are available.
Castle Clinton National Monument in The Battery offers a free visit to the fort and its exhibits, plus Junior Ranger programs for children.
What can children enjoy near the Financial District waterfront?
The Battery has two different ways for children to play near the water, one built for exploring and one for riding.
Battery Playscape at The Battery has five ecology zones, including granite slides, elevated tree houses and sand and water play. Its ShowBox is free for spontaneous youth performances.
SeaGlass Carousel at The Battery puts riders inside large fish figures that circle, sway and move up and down, taking its idea from the aquarium once located in the park.
Where can I have a pub meal in the Financial District?
For a pub meal downtown, you can choose a tavern menu with a Scotch egg or an Irish menu built around substantial classics.
Fraunces Tavern lists New England clam chowder with house-made bread and a Scotch egg made with three sausages, aged Mahon cheese and mustard.
The Dead Rabbit (Taproom) serves Irish lager-battered fish and chips with mushy peas, plus bangers and mash with colcannon and stout-onion gravy.
