Brooklyn Museum: a table set for women's history

Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party gathers historical and mythical women around a triangular banquet table at the Brooklyn Museum. You can examine 39 elaborate place settings, each with a hand-painted china plate and an embroidered runner made in response to a particular woman and her period. The installation extends beyond the tabletop: the Heritage Floor carries the names of 999 additional women.

Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden: follow the changing view

You encounter the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden a little at a time as its paths wind around the water. Inside Brooklyn Botanic Garden, south of the museum, it combines the hill-and-pond tradition with a stroll-garden design that gradually reveals different parts of the landscape. Artificial hills curve around a pond, with an island, a waterfall and carefully placed rocks appearing along the route.

The modern gray Jewish Children's Museum building stands along a city sidewalk with its name displayed near the entrance.

Jewish Children's Museum: groceries, holidays and everyday rituals

Children can take a small shopping cart through the kosher grocery exhibit at the Jewish Children's Museum, farther east on Eastern Parkway. If you're visiting with kids, the working scales and checkout scanner give them familiar tasks to try while exploring Jewish daily life. In the kosher kitchen, they sort dishes into designated cupboards, encounter a talking refrigerator and set a table for Shabbat dinner.

A child gently touches a small animal held by a museum educator in a colorful activity room.

Brooklyn Children's Museum: a borough built for pretend play

Your children can become bakers, grocers or shopkeepers in World Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Children's Museum, northwest of the Jewish Children's Museum. Its child-sized shops draw on actual borough businesses, with objects and stories from Brooklyn communities woven into the pretend play. Children can also take on the roles of designer, performer and builder.

Weeksville Heritage Center: family life in a free Black community

The Johnson and Williams families' homes bring you into the domestic history preserved at Weeksville Heritage Center, farther east on Buffalo Avenue. Guided visits through the surviving Hunterfly Road houses explore an independent free Black landowning community founded in 1838. The 1860s house contains furniture and artifacts from the Civil War era, when Weeksville was an agrarian village and sheltered African Americans fleeing Manhattan's 1863 Draft Riots.
