New York Aquarium: beneath the sharks

Blacktip reef sharks and zebra sharks swim above you in the coral reef tunnel at the New York Aquarium, sharing the water with butterflyfish. The tunnel is part of Ocean Wonders: Sharks!, an exhibit that moves between colorful reef life and the darker water of Canyon’s Edge. There, you can watch sand tiger sharks, sandbar sharks and rough-tail stingrays emerge into view.

Luna Park: ride the Cyclone

The Cyclone’s first plunge drops you 85 feet before its wooden track carries you through tight curves and repeated rises and falls. Just west of the aquarium, Luna Park holds this operating piece of Coney Island history, which first carried riders in 1927. During the amusement season, you can experience the landmark from inside a coaster train. Its twisting layout packs in 27 changes in elevation, so the opening drop is only the beginning.

The Wonder Wheel rises above rides and buildings at the Coney Island amusement park.

Deno’s Wonder Wheel: swinging cars and ocean views

Your choice of car changes the ride on the Wonder Wheel: red and blue cars swing, while white cars stay fixed within the wheel. At Deno's Wonder Wheel Amusement Park, the 150-foot landmark lifts you above the beach and boardwalk, with views across the Atlantic and toward the Manhattan skyline. First opened in 1920, it offers a very different ride from the Cyclone nearby, with the shoreline spread below you.

1208 Surf Ave

Coney Island Museum and Freak Bar

Vintage signs and objects from the amusements bring Coney Island’s past close enough for you to examine at the Coney Island Museum. The upstairs collection in Coney Island USA’s landmarked Surf Avenue building also includes photographs, paintings and printed ephemera devoted to the neighborhood. After seeing the surviving rides outside, you can browse the images and objects preserved from its longer life as a seaside amusement destination.

Steeplechase Pier: out over the Atlantic

Anglers share the Pat Auletta Steeplechase Pier with people walking out for an open-water view. Farther west along the waterfront, you can leave the boardwalk behind and follow the pier over the Atlantic. Turn back toward shore and the amusement skyline comes into view, including the tall framework of the Parachute Jump.

Neighborhood FAQs

Where can I eat on the Coney Island boardwalk?

For boardwalk food, one choice covers savory classics while the other focuses on something cold and sweet.

  • Salt & Sizzle serves hand-cut fries and cheesesteaks by the seashore, along with craft beer and cocktails. Its hours follow Luna Park.
  • Coney’s Cones, near West 10th Street, makes traditional gelato in alternating flavors such as cappuccino, mango and raspberry sorbet, served in cups or cones. Its hours also follow the park.

Which milder rides can families try at Luna Park?

Both rides are listed as mild thrills, and each lets riders influence how the car moves.

  • Magic Bikes seats two people in an elevated, hang glider-style car with bicycle pedals that control its movement through the air.
  • Tea Party puts your group in an oversized teacup; a central wheel lets you spin the cup in either direction at a pace you control.

Where can I play games in Coney Island without riding a coaster?

Luna Park has both an arcade for individual games and a midway race you can play against others.

  • Luna Arcade includes skeeball and boardwalk games that award tickets for its Prize Zone, plus interactive motorcycle racing and HD video games.
  • Whac A Mole is a race to hit the moles and score points; the first player to reach 150 wins.
